What About Chad?- 2/17/08

Already busy defending the Redskins hiring of a virtual uknown
as headcoach in Jim Zorn, I am quite sure that lavish spending of
big name players will soon occur, so why not get a head start in
defending those moves too?

It is true that the correct way to build a Championship caliber
NFL team is through the draft, and not free agency.  The Draft
lays the foundation and free agency fills in the holes.  It's
unbelievable that Dan Snyder would take the foolish approach of
reversing this basic formula to rely on free agency rather than the
draft.  It's also unbelievable that after the influence of Joe Gibbs,
Dan Snyder would continue this ill-fated strategy.  But what is
most unbelievable is that I, a Redskins fan who like the rest is
tired of the free agent nonsense, could still get excited about the
prospect of yet another highly touted, albeit overpaid acquisition.
This year, the Skins are looking to land a marquee number 1
receiver, and apparently Chad Johnson tops the list.  I'm finally
realizing now that Santana Moss isn't a number 1 receiver.  Mind
you, he's just about as talented as any number 1 in the league,
but the Redskins are lacking a prototypical big man to run routes
(hey, let's cut Campbell some slack on overthrowing his long
bombs to targets that probably look like ants to him).  Enter
Chad Johnson.
