| What About Chad?- 2/17/08 by Stevo Already busy defending the Redskins hiring of a virtual uknown as headcoach in Jim Zorn, I am quite sure that lavish spending of big name players will soon occur, so why not get a head start in defending those moves too? It is true that the correct way to build a Championship caliber NFL team is through the draft, and not free agency. The Draft lays the foundation and free agency fills in the holes. It's unbelievable that Dan Snyder would take the foolish approach of reversing this basic formula to rely on free agency rather than the draft. It's also unbelievable that after the influence of Joe Gibbs, Dan Snyder would continue this ill-fated strategy. But what is most unbelievable is that I, a Redskins fan who like the rest is tired of the free agent nonsense, could still get excited about the prospect of yet another highly touted, albeit overpaid acquisition. This year, the Skins are looking to land a marquee number 1 receiver, and apparently Chad Johnson tops the list. I'm finally realizing now that Santana Moss isn't a number 1 receiver. Mind you, he's just about as talented as any number 1 in the league, but the Redskins are lacking a prototypical big man to run routes (hey, let's cut Campbell some slack on overthrowing his long bombs to targets that probably look like ants to him). Enter Chad Johnson. I know we would land him a HUGE contract with an astronomical signing bonus, but I can't help myself, it's Chad Johnson! Ocho Cinco, people! He seems like the perfect receiver for Campbell, and can you imagine the three-receiver set of Ocho Cinco, Moss, and Randle-El? That would trump even the Patriots' receiving trio (that is, if Randy decides to stick it out in New England). And I would like to believe that any ego issues would be a non-issue in Washington. It's already a team full of marquee players and big personalities, unlike Penitentary #4564, aka the Cincinatti Bengals. I think they would keep Chad in check. And can we really blame Chad for wanting out of Sincinatti? I don't think so. The Redskins don't NEED Chad Johnson, per se, but look at the NFC East, which once again is the best and most competetive division in the league: The Cowboys went out and got T.O., the Giants got Burress, and the Eagles? Well, I hardly think we should be taking our personel-managing que from them, who probably wouldn't give a nickel to Jim Brown. To stay competitive with our division rivals, the Skins have to step it up a notch, and the time is NOW. NOW NOW NOW. The Giants just proved that winning the Superbowl is indeed a possibility, and Gibbs basically giftwrapped the best Redskins roster the team has seen in 15 years. And to close, I don't know about anyone else, but last year's season hurts to even think about. I want a fresh start, and Chad Johnson trotting out in Week 1 in a #85 Redskins jersey (with the bonus of replacing that piece of trash Brandon Lloyd) would do exactly that. |
